Coronavirus Update – March 7, 2020

To the Campus Community,

The task force established to coordinate institutional action regarding the Coronavirus situation has created a presence on the Franklin College website for the purpose of updating faculty, staff and students as necessary.  The site can be found at: https://franklincollege.edu/coronavirus/

For the immediate, the task force has created notices to be posted at the entrances to public events held on campus reminding visitors to please not attend if they have experienced symptoms identified by the CDC as possible indications of the Coronavirus.  We are also positioning additional hand sanitizing stations at such public events.  Similar notices are being posted on entrances to campus facilities to remind students, faculty, staff and visitors of the same.

The physical plant staff is focusing special attention on the frequent cleaning of “high touch” areas of campus facilities.  Parkhurst Dining Service has instituted specific protocols for its staff, consistent with food service best practice recommendations.

I want to encourage supervisors to be vigilant in insisting that employees experiencing fever, cough, or difficulty breathing stay home and call their primary care physician rather than reporting for work.  Likewise, I am asking faculty members to insist on similar protocol for students. Students experiencing these symptoms should call either their primary care physician or the Campus Health Center at 317.738.8090. Please do not direct students with these symptoms to visit the Health Center; the CDC recommended protocol is a phone call to a health care provider. In each case, attendance policies may require some flexibility in order to ensure symptomatic members of the community remain appropriately isolated. More guidance to the faculty will be forthcoming from the Provost’s Office.

Thanks to everyone for remaining both vigilant and conscientious in helping us protect the health and safety of students and colleagues.  If you have specific questions on this issue, please direct them to Vice President and Dean of Students Andrew Jones, who is chairing the task force.
