Franklin College will host an online fundraiser titled #GRIZTuesday on Tuesday, Dec. 1, with all donations supporting its athletic programs.
“Many are familiar with the annual worldwide day of philanthropy called #GivingTuesday, to be held on Dec. 1 this year,” said Dana Cummings, vice president for development and alumni engagement. “We will once again be a part of that phenomenon, but we are renaming the day to #GRIZTuesday and directing all the funds raised during that 24-hour period to our athletic programs.”
The college’s athletic teams, cheer squad and athletic training crew have had not had opportunities to conduct their normal fundraising efforts due to their competition seasons being postponed, canceled and reformatted because of the pandemic. This initiative will help the college provide the best athletic experiences for its student-athletes this spring when many will resume competition.
“We fully intend to compete this spring,” said Andy Hendricks, the college’s athletic director. “Every dollar raised will help procure important equipment and resources, recruit new members, fund critical training trips and preserve the legacy of Grizzly athletics. The day is meant to be an energetic, inspiring, 24-hour virtual gathering of alumni, parents, staff, students, faculty and friends of the college. After all, who doesn’t enjoy some friendly competition?”
The college is planning to use social media, especially Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, to market the 24-hour fundraising effort, as well as email and other college communication formats. At noon and 7 p.m., Rafael Sánchez, WRTV Channel 6 anchor/reporter and 1992 alumnus of the college, will host special virtual “power hours” that are sure to be fun events. The public is encouraged to register at FranklinCollege.edu/griztuesday to stay informed as the day progresses and hear from surprise guests.
The website link to be accessed for giving will be released on the college’s social media platforms beginning at 12:01 a.m., on Tuesday, Dec. 1. Donors may direct their gift to their favorite team or a general athletics fund. The giving website will display a real-time running tally of the number of donors and dollars raised for each team, as well as an overall total.
