Tim Garner, Ph.D., associate vice president for institutional analytics and special projects at Franklin College, has been appointed to TechPoint’s board of directors.
TechPoint is the nonprofit, industry-led growth accelerator for Indiana’s tech ecosystem. TechPoint was established in 2003 when two IT industry organizations, Indiana Software Association (ISA) and the Indiana Information Technology Association (INITA) merged together. The company’s objective is to bring together Indiana’s tech companies, philanthropies, government, universities, and talent to create opportunities throughout the state.
Garner’s role with TechPoint is part of a Franklin College initiative to enhance the level of digital fluency of its students across the curriculum while engaging in innovative co-curricular experiences that also engage with technological opportunities. The program has grown from a recent grant the college received from Lilly Endowment Inc., as part of the philanthropic organization’s Charting the Future for Indiana’s Colleges and Universities initiative.
“I’m delighted to represent Franklin College in this new and exciting collaboration with TechPoint,” said Garner, who manages the college’s IT services. “I am hopeful that the relationships we will develop via TechPoint will enhance our efforts to equip students with the digital competencies necessary to thrive in today’s technology-driven world.”
The “Charting the Future” initiative, announced by Lilly Endowment in late October 2019, is intended to help leaders of Indiana’s 38 colleges and universities address their key challenges and take advantage of promising opportunities to enhance their relevance and sustainability. Lilly Endowment is encouraging higher education leaders to explore collaborative strategies among colleges and universities in Indiana or around the country and with business, governmental or charitable organizations.
“We are excited to enter this partnership with TechPoint, and Dr. Garner’s membership on the board reflects our shared commitment to the future of our digital fluency initiative,” said Franklin College President Kerry Prather. “A key step in our goal of connecting with the burgeoning tech sector in Indianapolis and central Indiana is collaborating with the professionals at TechPoint.”
Garner graduated from Franklin College in 1979 with majors in sociology and psychology. He earned his master’s degree and doctorate in sociology at the University of Illinois and returned to Franklin College in 1986 to teach sociology. Garner has served in a variety of roles at Franklin College including: professor and chair of sociology; interim dean of students; associate dean and director of institutional research; associate dean and director of faculty development; associate vice president for academic affairs and institutional effectiveness; interim vice president for enrollment, marketing and communications; interim provost and dean of the college; and, currently, associate vice president for institutional analytics and special projects. Garner also works as a consultant primarily in the areas of organizational culture, customized research, user-centered design/research, and predictive analytics. He is a resident of Whiteland.
