Sociology Student Opportunities

“Luck favors the prepared,’ as the saying goes. Likewise, opportunities are most often found by those who search. The sociology department prepares students for life outside college and teaches them to find opportunities by inviting practitioners into classrooms, taking students on trips, and via internships. Sociology faculty encourage students to maximize their learning, on and off campus.

Fieldtrips

Sociology has a long history of using cities as field sites. Sociology students tour jails, prisons, detention centers, and other correctional sites. Students have also visited social justice programs in Memphis Tennessee, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, and venues in other cities. Downtown Indianapolis is less than 20 miles from campus. Chicago, Cincinnati, Louisville, and St. Louis are within a morning’s drive. Indeed, half of the population of the US lives within one day’s drive of campus. Franklin is a small college with incredible access to big cities that the sociology department  exploits.
