Franklin College Associate Professor of History, Lourdes Hurtado, Ph.D., was selected to attend the Faculty Seminar in World War II History from June 23–29, 2024. Chosen through a competitive application process, Hurtado was among approximately 20 distinguished participants invited by the Jenny Craig Institute for the Study of War and Democracy.

The seminar, hosted at the National World War II History Museum in New Orleans, aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of the war’s major themes, campaigns, outcomes and legacies. The weeklong program included a series of content and pedagogical seminars led by expert faculty, designed to enhance the teaching of WWII history and its impact on college communities.

The seminar was intended to develop the knowledge and understanding of WWII for active college or university faculty who wish to teach, advocate or design history courses about this significant conflict.

“Attending the Faculty Seminar in World War II History was an amazing experience,” said Hurtado. “I was able to deepen my knowledge about the strategic, operational and tactical aspects of the American military during WWII. I also feel that I learned a lot about the Pacific Theater of War, of which I did not know much before. The topics and materials discussed in this faculty seminar will inform my classes on World History and Military History. I also feel better prepared to advise our history majors if they decide to do their research projects on WWII.”

Hurtado’s participation in this esteemed seminar underscores Franklin College’s commitment to providing its students with a rich and informed educational experience. Her enhanced expertise will significantly benefit the college’s history program and its students.

Hurtado joined the Franklin College faculty in 2012. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the National Major University of San Marcos in Lima, Peru. She earned both her master’s degree and her doctorate degree from the University of Notre Dame. She is a resident of Franklin.
