Mathematics

At Franklin College, carefully chosen co-curricular experiences are deliberately integrated with coursework to provide mathematics students with high-impact learning opportunities that prepare them to tackle the quantitative challenges that face the world today while also helping you to develop the skill sets necessary to take on future challenges.

As a mathematics major, you will have the chance to interact with alumni and guest speakers, learn about how mathematics is used in the workplace through on-site visits at local employers, travel to regional and national conferences, and analyze datasets for local non-profit agencies.

Mathematics majors apply their skills in practical settings, through courses that task students with completing client research, empowering them to solve real-world problems and gain experience in statistical consulting and big data analysis.

Engaging and Innovative Programs

• Majors to Match Your Interests: With five distinct majors in mathematics (applied mathematics, pure mathematics, quantitative analysis, actuarial science, and data science), Franklin College can meet your individual educational needs, no matter what your interests or career goals are.
• Focus on Active Learning: In Franklin College mathematics courses, you will work individually and in teams to discover mathematical concepts and address real-world problems in their courses. In addition, technology is strategically incorporated into the curriculum to give you additional hands-on opportunities. Internships, research experiences, and other co-curricular activities provide opportunities for engaged learning beyond the classroom.
• Unique Courses: Courses pioneered in our department have been adopted by other mathematics departments statewide and nationally. Two of these innovative courses (a first-year activity course that provides students with a glimpse into the exciting world of mathematics beyond calculus and a senior-level course in which students provide statistical consulting services to a local non-profit organization) bookend the experience of Franklin College mathematics majors.
• Agile Design: As part of a small college, we can quickly implement changes in our curriculum when we identify new student needs. For example, after a survey of employers revealed a growing need for skills related to the management and analysis of big data, the department quickly created a new course, Big Data and the Professional Workplace, in which students tackle big data’s nuanced challenges by analyzing a real-world data set under the guidance of their professor and an alumni coach working in industry. We adapt quickly and better prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s careers.

Nationally Recognized

The Franklin College Department of Mathematics and Computing has achieved regional and national recognition for its innovative programs.

• The Franklin College mathematics program was selected as the winner of the 2019 American Mathematical Society’s Award for an Exemplary Program or Achievement in a Mathematics Department based on the purposeful and engaging learning experience we have designed for our students.
• The Association of College and University Educators recently selected Franklin College’s overall mathematics curriculum, and our statistical consulting project in particular, as national models for 21st century career preparation.
