Art Minors

Enhance your education with our art minors

The art department offers six dynamic minors that complement a variety of majors: Art History, Art Studio, Ceramics, Digital Fine Art Photography, Graphic Design, and Painting. Each minor provides unique opportunities to enhance your education and develop specialized skills in the arts.

Art History Minor

Franklin College’s Art History minor teaches students to look closely, think critically, and understand the world through the objects, images, and environments that people have created across time and culture. Coursework spans ancient civilizations to contemporary movements and includes museum visits, gallery tours, and original research.

These skills travel well beyond the art world, serving students in law, education, nonprofit work, journalism, and anywhere that careful analysis and clear communication matter. The minor pairs naturally with History, English, Sociology, Political Science, and Education.

Art Studio Minor

Franklin College’s Art Studio minor invites students of any major to develop a creative voice —studio courses emphasize experimentation, personal expression, and creative risk-taking, guided by faculty who are working artists themselves.

This minor pairs especially well with Education, Psychology, and English — and any major where creativity and visual thinking add genuine value.

Ceramics Minor

Franklin College’s Ceramics minor invites students into one of art’s oldest and most meditative practices — one that is as technically demanding as it is personally rewarding. Students master hand-building and wheel throwing, explore glazing and kiln firing, develop conceptual and historical context, and build a cohesive body of work through regular critique.

No prior experience required. This minor pairs naturally with Studio Art, Education, and Environmental Science. Open to any student with curiosity and a willingness to work with their hands.

Digital Fine Art Photography Minor

Franklin College’s Digital Fine Art Photography minor goes beyond filters and social media aesthetics to teach photography as a serious artistic discipline. Students gain complete technical command of the camera, develop fluency in professional editing software, study photography within the history of art, and build a polished, cohesive portfolio suited to internship applications, graduate school, or professional use.

No prior experience required. This minor pairs naturally with Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Environmental Science, Sociology, and Education — anywhere that powerful visual communication adds value to your work.

Graphic Design Minor

Franklin College’s Graphic Design minor gives students the skills to bring ideas to life through visual communication. In a world where design drives brand identity, digital media, and storytelling, design literacy is one of the most marketable skills you can add to any degree.

Students build a foundation in typography, color theory, layout, and visual hierarchy; gain fluency in Adobe Creative Suite; learn branding and web design; and complete a professional portfolio. This minor pairs naturally with Marketing, Journalism, Business, and Communications.

Painting Minor

Franklin College’s Painting minor gives students the time, space, and instruction needed to develop a serious studio practice — whether they are beginners or returning artists ready to go deeper. Students build technical foundations in color, composition, and materials; work from observation and imagination; situate their practice within painting history; and develop professional studio habits through critique.

This minor pairs especially well with Psychology, English, Education, and the sciences — wherever visual thinking and sustained attention enrich academic work and personal life.
