Transfer Policy

Transfer students with prior graduate-level athletic training education are evaluated on an individual basis. In direct consultation, the student and the MSAT Program Director develop a plan of study that builds on previous learning, addresses necessary content and skill requirements, and ensures the student’s complete incorporation into the program at the college. Transfer students are required to provide the MSAT program director with course descriptions and appropriately dated syllabi for all graduate-level athletic training specific courses prior to approval for transfer credit. Transfer students are held to all application requirements and must complete the application process through ATCAS. As per Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training (CAATE) requirements, students must be enrolled in a CAATE accredited professional-level master’s program for a minimum of two calendar years prior to graduation in order to meet graduation requirements. The MSAT Program reserves the right to request prospective transfer students participate in “placement testing” to determine their knowledge and skill in various athletic training domains of practice. Additionally, once admitted should deficiencies in skills or knowledge be determined by program faculty, transfer students may be required to audit courses where transfer credit was received, as part of a remediation plan.

Early Admittance

The early admittance option is for any current Franklin College undergraduate student, typically a freshman or sophomore, who selects a 3+2 pathway.

The 3+2 path allows students to complete their bachelor’s and master’s in 5 years. Students can select from one of two pathways: 3+2 exercise science or 3+2 psychology.

Franklin College undergraduate students can apply to the MSAT program for early admittance during their freshman, sophomore, or junior year. *High school direct admit students do not need to apply for early admittance as long as they maintain retention requirements as a high school direct admit. The student must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Must be a declared major for exercise science or psychology
  • Complete and submit the MSAT Program application form
  • Earn a “C” or higher in ANAT 210
  • Achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Obtain a minimum of 20 hours of observation with a certified athletic trainer – submitted on the hour verification form
  • Submit a personal statement (describe observation hour experiences and interest in the AT profession)
  • Submit two letters of recommendation: One from a faculty member and one from either a certified athletic trainer, physician, or other healthcare provider – submitted on the evaluation form

Scholarship and Financial Aid for Master of Science in Athletic Training

Graduate programs offering 3+1, 3+2, and 4+1 formats, are generally designed for students to complete both undergraduate and graduated coursework in an accelerated timeframe. Undergraduate financial aid does not carry over into graduate-level study. Undergraduate financial aid may include academic, merit, or other grants and scholarships upon admission to an undergraduate program. Once a student begins taking courses as part of a graduate program, that student is considered a graduate student for financial aid purposes, and all undergraduate scholarships discontinue. This applies equally to students entering the first year of graduate programs like the MSAT program, whose aid and billing structure transition to graduate status at that time.

Franklin College MSAT program offers a limited number of scholarships to admitted students on a first come, first serve basis. Scholarships are based on the student’s undergraduate GPA. A student may be awarded additional scholarship funds for earned credentials (PTA, massage therapy, etc.), certifications (such as massage therapy, manual therapies, or other similar healthcare/sports medicine related certifications), recognized honors/awards, and/or number of observation hours/internship experiences. Awards range from $1000-$5000 and are awarded in the first year of the program. The application for admission serves as the application for these scholarships. Contact the program director for more information.

High school students who earned “Direct Admit” status to the MSAT program are eligible for a $2500 scholarship award upon matriculation into the MSAT program should they meet the undergraduate retention requirements.

External scholarship opportunities for athletic training students are available for students who are members of our state organization, Indiana Athletic Trainers’ Association (IATA), our district organization, Great Lakes Athletic Training Association (GLATA), and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). Visit the IATA website: www.iata-usa.org, the GLATA website: www.glata.org, and the NATA website: www.nata.org for more information. It is the responsibility of the student to submit application materials to the appropriate parties and in a timely manner for these scholarship opportunities. Make sure to pay attention to the deadlines associated with each scholarship as they differ from one another.

  • To determine your eligibility for financial aid the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required. The FAFSA can be filed at https://studentaid.gov  and is available October 1 EACH year.
  • Beginning mid-April financial aid awards will be available for enrolled MSAT students via the online financial aid system.
  • MSAT paid internship opportunity – unique opportunity for 1st year MSAT student to serve as intern for the Franklin College library. Any MSAT student eligible for Federal Student Aid can apply.
  • Financial Aid questions can be directed to the Office of Financial Aid at finaid@FranklinCollege.edu or 317.738.8075.
