Learn more about Chemistry and Physics at Franklin College

As chemistry majors study general, organic, analytical and physical chemistry, they do so in a modern science center furnished with interactive work spaces, dedicated student research labs and new, cutting-edge chromatography and spectroscopy equipment. Students can also start their undergraduate research experience as early as their first year. This opportunity, traditionally reserved for graduate-level courses, helps students prepare for life post-graduation, whether they aspire to secure a lucrative job in the field or pursue an advanced degree at a prestigious graduate school. Past research topics include:

  • Theoretical calculations and matrix isolation FT-IR spectroscopy
  • Elucidation of the mechanism of organosulfur compounds using reaction kinetics
  • Instrumental design for super resolution microscopy
  • Synthesis of medicinally important sulfur/nitrogen heterocycles
  • Two dimensional NMR spectroscopy of biomolecules
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound

Chemistry is also available as a minor.

Chemistry Major Tracks

Standard Track

Standard track is suitable for students with a general interest with chemistry. It is suitable for students considering double major or minor in a non-science discipline.

Biochemistry Track

Our biochemistry track is the best fit for students considering a career in health science. Students interested in medical school, pharmacy school, physician assistant programs and others are highly recommended to consider this track.

Environmental Track

Our environmental track provides students an opportunity to consider a career in environmental protection, regulations, and possible government scientist positions.

Industry/Graduate School Track

Our industry/ graduate School track is an “enhanced” version of standard track with additionally required elective chemistry courses. Students considering a Master/ PhD program should definitely consider this track as it helps prepare students for those programs. It will also make students more competitive for an industry job. Students who have not decided on graduate school or industry can also benefit from the comprehensive training from this track.
