“The goal is for students to no longer need me after graduation because I helped them develop those transferable skills essential to every successful professional. It is done by making it clear they are all valued individuals integral to the classroom and beyond. That is the mission statement guiding every lesson, regardless of subject.”

What is the Indiana High School Press Association?

The Indiana High School Press Association was founded in 1922 by two Franklin College students who wanted to help high school students produce quality publications. The organization has championed the core values of truth, courage, integrity, and freedom for more than a century and continues to provide resources for scholastic journalism educators and students in addition to signature events such as the annual Indiana high school journalism convention at Franklin College. Why participate in scholastic journalism?

Scholastic journalism provides one of the few experiences that closely mirrors the professional landscape awaiting students post-graduation. It puts them in real life circumstances where success is dependent upon their peers, many of which come from different backgrounds and upbringings. Student media is the lab where participants develop valuable skills applicable to various career paths, not just journalism, such as communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving. But more importantly, these students who have, and utilize, a voice are more engaged, empowered, and informed citizens who constantly strive to make their communities better.
