I am a plant ecologist who has worked with non-profit organizations to connect research to application. Specifically, I am interested in restoration ecology and promoting the growth of rare plant species in prairie ecosystems. My research has explored the roles of microbial mutualisms in plant growth, disturbance management, and trait-based frameworks.

What do you enjoy most about teaching your subject?

I really enjoy bringing students outside to not only connect with nature, but to learn about what makes each plant community unique! Through identifying different plant species and considering their roles in the ecosystem and to us, students are able to actively engage in a classroom that is all around us.

What research opportunities are available in your area of expertise?

Plants are the foundation of life so there are endless opportunities for research! Together, students and I can establish laboratory and field experiments that investigate drivers of plant establishment. This can be done through manipulating the growing conditions of plants by testing nutrient limitations or exploring the role of microbial mutualists. Students can also gain hands-on research experience in natural landscapes through learning plant identification, data collection and analysis, and communicating with nature preserve managers and restoration practitioners.

What is your primary focus in teaching?

My primary focus in teaching is to generate excitement in the classroom. I strive to make my classes approachable and interesting to students by using case studies that can connect the course material to their lives and career interests.
