Post-9/11 GI Bill® Information

The Post-9/11 GI Bill® is a new education benefit program for individuals who served on active duty on or after September 11, 2001.

Am I Eligible?

You may be eligible if you…

  • Served at least 90 aggregate days on active duty after September 10, 2001, and you are still on active duty or were honorably discharged from active duty.
  • Released from active duty and placed on the retired list or temporary disability list.
  • Released from active duty and transferred to the Fleet Reserve or Fleet Marine Corps Reserve.
  • Released from active duty for further service in a reserve component of the Armed Forces.

You may also be eligible if you were honorably discharged from active duty for a service-connected disability and you served 30 continuous days after September 10, 2001.

If you were eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill®, Montgomery GI Bill®-Selected Reserve, or the Reserve Educational Assistance Program on August 1, 2009, and you qualify for the Post-9/11 GI Bill®, you may make the irrevocable election to receive benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill®. Once you elect to receive benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill®, you will no longer be eligible to receive benefits under your previous program.

Please note:
Veteran’s Affairs, not Franklin College, determines level of eligibility and payments.

Yellow Ribbon Program

The Post-9/11 GI Bill® pays up to the highest public, in-state undergraduate tuition and fees. A participant may have tuition and fees that exceed that amount if they are attending a private institution. If they are enrolled at a Yellow Ribbon participating institution and the tuition and fees exceed the highest public, in-state undergraduate tuition or fees, additional funds may be available for an education program without an additional charge to entitlement. Institutions that voluntarily enter into a Yellow Ribbon Agreement with VA choose the amount of tuition and fees that will be contributed. VA will match that amount and issue payment directly to the institution. Franklin College is a participating Yellow Ribbon institution of higher learning.

Please note: Only individuals entitled to the maximum benefit rate (based on service requirements) may receive Yellow Ribbon funding. For more information about VA benefits, please visit https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill.

Active-Duty Service Members Residency Requirement

Franklin College understands the unique situation that service members on active duty face when trying to complete their degree, and values the sacrifices that these service members must make.  Active duty service members must complete a minimum of 32 semester hours(25%) of their coursework at Franklin College to be eligible for a degree.  Those hours are not required to be the final 32 semester hours.  It is the responsibility of the service member to notify the Registrar if they are on active-duty and pursuing a Franklin College degree while completing their degree requirements elsewhere, and to ensure all degree requirements are met according to the catalog under which they entered.  This policy also applies to Reservist and National Guardsmen on active-duty.
