The Franklin College Theatre Department is presenting A Midsummer Night’s Dream written by William Shakespeare. The performances will take place at 8 p.m., beginning Thursday, Oct. 2, through Saturday, Oct. 4 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5. All performances will be in Théâtre Margot in the Johnson Center for Fine Arts.
As Duke Theseus prepares to marry Hippolyta, four young Athenians find themselves tangled in a forest filled with love, jealousy and mistaken identities. Meanwhile, a group of bumbling amateur actors rehearse a play for the wedding celebration, only to become part of the night’s whimsical chaos. Overseeing the mischief are Oberon and Titania, the fairy king and queen, whose quarrel and magical interventions spark hilarious confusion and transformation. Mixing romance, fantasy and humor, Shakespeare’s timeless play explores the unpredictable nature of love and the thin line between reality and dreams.
Robin Roberts, professor of theatre at Franklin College, will direct the play. Roberts earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in playwriting from Southern Illinois University. He has a Master of Arts degree in theatre and speech from the University of South Carolina and a bachelor’s degree in English from Clemson University. Roberts is a resident of Franklin.
