The Franklin College Art Department will welcome its second guest artist of the 2024-2025 academic year to campus on February 25. The exhibition is titled “Affirmations.”

Deborah Hutchinson-Hagedorn, an artist and printmaker, will exhibit her work in the Elba L. & Gene Portteus Branigin Atrium, located in the Johnson Center for Fine Arts. She will open the exhibition with a short lecture at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, Feb. 25. An opening reception will follow. The exhibit showcases her inspired interpretations of nature, revealing the beauty of her travels and immersion in the natural world.

The events of the evening are free and open to the public.

Franklin College faculty, staff and students with a valid college ID card may view the exhibit Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Feb. 25 through March 21.

Hutchinson-Hagedorn, an Indianapolis native, earned her BFA in Printmaking from Herron School of Art (1981) and her MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (1983). After working as a professional artist in New Jersey, where she received a New Jersey Council on the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship, she returned to Indiana in 1986. She co-founded an art fabrication and sign business before beginning a long teaching career at Vincennes University, where she rose to Full Professor of Art and won several teaching awards.

She has exhibited her work regionally, earning numerous purchase and merit awards. Since retiring in 2017, she has focused on creating art in her home studio using various mediums, including watercolor, collage, screen print and monotype. Inspired by her extensive travels across Europe and visits to 38 U.S. National Parks, her recent work reflects her deep connection to nature and her experiences in these landscapes. In addition to exhibiting on campus this year, Hutchison-Hagedorn has been awarded the Clowes Visiting Artist grant and will return to campus in January 2026 to teach a printing course during the college’s Immersive Term.
