Connecting Indiana to the World
Samantha Gutierrez knew what she wanted to do when she got to Franklin College and forged her path. Using the College’s individualized major program, she created her course of study in International Relations. Gutierrez said that “this [approach] was instrumental in deepening my understanding of global dynamics, political theory and diplomatic practices.”
Gutierrez was able to further expand on her education through a study abroad trip to Brussels, Belgium, where she studied the European Union and political science.
“The study abroad opportunity enhanced my learning. I got to go over there and live with a host family and travel, but then I also got to study courses like human rights, international relations and foreign policy.” — Samantha Gutierrez ’18
Furthering her international travels after college, she had the opportunity to teach English classes in France for a year.
After graduating in 2018, she now works at the International Center in Indianapolis as the Development and Engagement Manager. Through this position, she stays connected to Franklin College by offering internship positions to students. “One of the most rewarding parts of my job is working with student interns, giving them hands-on experience in a multicultural environment,” Gutierrez said. “[When] Franklin College students come and intern with us, it provides them with a multicultural environment.”
Thanks to her liberal arts education, Gutierrez has gained the skills of adapting, problem-solving and thinking critically in the workplace. Now she uses those skills to bring Indiana to the world and the world to Indiana. Reflecting on how Franklin College opened doors to a world of possibilities, she said that “The combination of a customized academic path and hands-on international experiences has equipped me with the skills and insights needed to pursue my career aspirations.”
