College Kicks Off 2020-2021 Carlson-Stauffer Reading Series

Franklin College will welcome award-winning author Adrian Matejka to kick off the 2020-2021 Carlson-Stauffer Reading Series. The virtual event is free, open to the public, and will be held over Zoom on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m., as part of the college’s Homecoming and Alumni Weekend festivities. Adrian Matejka is the author of The Devil’s Garden, Mixology, The Big Smoke, Map to the Stars and Last On His Feet, which releases in 2021. The Devil’s Garden won the New York/New England Award and Mixology was a winner of the 2008 National Poetry Series as well as a finalist for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literature. His third collection, The Big Smoke, was awarded the 2014 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award and a finalist for the 2013 National Book Award, the 2014 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, and the 2014 Pulitzer Prize in poetry.

Matejka’s honors include the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award, the Julia Peterkin Award and a Pushcart Prize. He has had fellowships with the Academy of American Poets, the Bellagio Center, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Lannan Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and a a Simon Fellowship from United States Artists. He also was the Poet Laureate of Indiana for 2018-19.

Matejka was born in Nuremberg, Germany, and grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and his master of fine arts degree from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Matejka teaches at Indiana University in Bloomington.

The Carlson-Stauffer Reading Series is co-sponsored by the English and creative writing department, the Center for Diversity and Inclusion and the Indiana Humanities’ INconversation program. This series is made possible through a grant from Indiana Humanities in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Humanities.
