College Hosting Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Celebration
Events and Lectures

Franklin College invites the community to participate in a day of service and other activities honoring the life and legacy of Dr. King on Monday, Jan. 20, 2020.

The public is invited to participate in these celebratory campus events:

All day – Display Table: Stop by the display in the atrium of the Napolitan Student Center to learn more about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Various times – Community Service: A national event, Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a way to transform Dr. King’s life and teachings into community service that helps empower and strengthen local communities. Registration for this portion of the day is now closed.

1:15 p.m. – Chapel Service, Richardson Chapel:  The Rev. Richard Bray, member of Eastern Star Church (ESC), will begin the afternoon with a chapel service. Bray is currently a community partnerships manager at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and has over twenty years of combined community engagement and higher education experience.

3:15 p.m. – MLK Day Commemorative March: The march will begin west of the B.F. Hamilton Library at the Indiana Alpha Gazebo and end at the Richardson Chapel. The purpose of the march is to honor those who marched before to win the freedoms known today and with those who still struggle to have their freedoms recognized.

4 p.m. – MLK Day Convocation Lecture, Richardson Chapel: Lisa Coffman, Franklin College alumna and staff member at the Office of Special Needs Assistance Programs at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will present a lecture titled “The Relentless Pursuit of Dr. King’s Dream Today.”

7 p.m. – Movie Showing of Moonlight, Richardson Chapel: The 2017 film won the Academy Award for Best Picture and is critically acclaimed for its poetic and emotional approach to the black male identity and its interactions with sexual identity. Please note, the movie is rated R.
