Donors stepped-up in a big way to support Franklin College’s first-ever #GRIZTuesday on Tuesday, Dec. 1. The college raised $179,912 during the 24-hour day of giving, far surpassing its $100,000 goal for the day.
“We are so incredibly grateful to the 1,283 donors and 27 sponsors who generously supported #GRIZTuesday,” said Dana Cummings, vice president for development and alumni engagement. “The outpouring of support by our alumni, friends, faculty, staff, students and parents has been nothing short of amazing. We are also very thankful to Rafael Sánchez for hosting the special virtual ‘power hours’ and providing some added fun during the day.”
Sponsorship funds and donations raised during the one-day giving initiative will support the college’s athletic programs. The athletic teams, cheer squad and athletic training staff have not had opportunities to conduct their normal fundraising efforts due to their competition seasons being postponed, canceled and reformatted because of the pandemic. This initiative will help the college provide the best athletic experiences for its student-athletes this spring when many will resume competition.
“This effort did much more than fill a void in fundraising that was a result of the pandemic,” said Andy Hendricks, director of athletics and head swimming coach. “It was a larger success than we expected and demonstrates the pride and passion our friends, families, faculty, students and alumni share with regards to athletics and our student-athletes. In the end, we are all here for them, and literally every student-athlete will benefit from these dollars in some way. It was a phenomenal success and a great example of investing in people.”
The college used social media, especially Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, to market the 24-hour fundraising effort, as well as email and other college communication formats. At noon and 7 p.m., Rafael Sánchez, WRTV Channel 6 anchor/reporter and 1992 alumnus of the college, hosted special virtual ‘power hours,’ with surprise guests including Franklin College President Kerry Prather and 2008 alumnus Matt Taylor, the official radio voice of the Indianapolis Colts.
Prather chose to emphasize the institutional teamwork reflected by the success of #GRIZTuesday. “From the creativity of the development team to the leadership of the coaching staff to the tremendous response of our alumni and friends, this event truly demonstrates the commitment of our staff and the intense loyalty of our Grizzly family. I am so thankful for everyone who supported our student-athletes with time, effort and resources.”
Miller Transportation and Luson BioVentures were the #GRIZTuesday title sponsors.
