The vision of the Center is to be a catalyst, dedicated to engaging all cultural communities at Franklin College around the value of diversity. We aim to create an inclusive educational environment where understanding, dialogue and the free exchange of ideas are celebrated. These efforts will contribute to the development of critically conscious global citizens at Franklin College and beyond.

The mission of the Center is to support students, faculty/staff and the community by promoting the value of diversity, broadening multicultural awareness, advancing cultural competence and encouraging cross-cultural collaborative relationships through education and advocacy.

What do we do?

  • Provide diversity and inclusion education, training, development and leadership opportunities for the advancement of the Franklin College campus community and Johnson County.
  • Advance the Franklin College campus community’s awareness, understanding, appreciation and respect for diversity and inclusion.
  • Serve as a physical and emotional safe and brave space for all Franklin College students, faculty and staff to gather, engage in programming, reflection and communion with one another.
  • Encourage community values, emphasize a welcoming and inclusive environment for all people regardless of race, ethnicity, sex, gender, physical or mental ability.
  • Contribute to a culture of care through programs and services to create a sense of belonging for all students on campus.
  • Collaborate with campus partners, allies, departments, and community leaders to realize the College’s value of inclusivity and community.

Statement on Open Dialogue and Inclusion

At Franklin College, we are a community committed to allowing diverse, inclusive, and sometimes even controversial, opinions and experiences for our students and greater community. This commitment is intentionally evident in the events we host, the programming we develop and our steadfast promise of making all feel valued and respected. Our intent is to provide information and experiences to foster discussion that is both civil and respectful and increases understanding of the rich diversity within our global society.

We also are committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment and to ensuring that educational and employment decisions are based on individuals’ abilities and qualifications. Consistent with these principles and applicable laws, it is our policy not to discriminate on the basis of age, color, disability, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, national origin, marital status, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or veteran status as consistent with the Policy on Prohibited Discrimination, Harassment and Related Misconduct. Safe Zone Learning Opportunities

Safe Zone training sessions are designed to increase the overall understanding and awareness of issues faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning/queer, intersex, asexual (LGBTQIA+) and other marginalized persons.

Safe Zone One training focuses on terminology, privilege and the coming out process.

Purpose of Safe Zone

  • Provide space for open, honest discussion of LGBTQIA+ topics, ideas, and issues.
  • Identify members of the Franklin College community who will model support, affirmation and inclusion of LGBTQIA+ people.
  • Reduce homophobia, transphobia, and heterosexism on the Franklin College campus, making our campus a safer and more affirming environment for all members of our community regardless of sexual orientation.
  • Prepare individuals to serve as resources for LGBTQIA+ students, faculty and staff.
  • Educate the campus community about LGBTQIA+ issues.

Goals of Safe Zone

  • Promote an environment where each member of the Franklin College community is welcomed and valued.
  • Support the understanding, acceptance, and appreciation of our LGBTQIA+ students.
  • Develop a culture of inclusion at Franklin College through a network of Safe Zone trained students, faculty and staff who support our LGBTQIA+ students; understand the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community; are aware of campus resources; and work to challenge discrimination, homophobia, transphobia, heterosexism and ignorance.
