Franklin College sophomores Nathan Jones and Zachary Schreiner were presented with the esteemed Laurels and Lancers Awards during the annual Opening Convocation and Bell Ceremony on Friday, Aug. 23.  Each year, Franklin College recognizes two outstanding students for their first-year academic and campus-community achievements.

As award winners, Jones and Schreiner had the pleasure of signaling the start of the academic year by ringing the ceremonial college bell. As a memento of the occasion, they each received framed certificates as keepsakes, and their names are engraved on the Laurels and Lancers Trophy, which is on display in the academic affairs department at the college.

“Our Laurels and Lancers Award, conferred by vote of the faculty, acknowledges the excellence of two outstanding sophomore students based on academic success and campus involvement as first year students,” said Kristin C. Flora, Ph.D., vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college. “Nathan and Zachary serve as great role models for their peers on how to fully take advantage of all that Franklin College has to offer both inside and outside the classroom.”

Jones, a Brownsburg native, carries an impressive academic schedule, majoring in political science, accounting and Spanish, with a pre-law designation. Outside of the classroom, he is a member of FC Singers, the Men’s Chorus and serves as treasurer of Alpha Lambda Delta, an honor society that recognizes first-year academic success. Jones was named to the dean’s list and the president’s list during his first two semesters on campus. He aspires to be a corporate tax attorney, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, William Jones Jr., who also attended Franklin College.

Schreiner, a native of Indianapolis, attended Franklin Central High School. He is pursuing a double major in actuarial science and data science. His academic excellence resulted in being named to the dean’s list and the president’s list during his first two semesters at Franklin College. Schreiner is a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, the FC Band, the Men’s Chorus and the FC Drumline. He is also a member of the college’s esports team, and cites winning the Call of Duty Esports Championship as one of his favorite memories at FC so far.
