Academic Mentoring
The Academic Mentoring Program is a great way to supplement what is learned in the classroom and to polish skills and knowledge. Academic mentors are upperclassmen who have proven themselves successful in a particular course. They are placed in the course and attend regularly. The mentors then discuss course material with the professors and come up with material for review sessions. These review sessions are offered throughout the week (typically 2-3 times) in the Academic Resource Center or other classrooms on campus. Any student in the course may attend. In fact, everyone is encouraged to attend!
Review Sessions Include:
- Recap of lectures
- Q&A session
- Additional material on important or difficult sections
- Test preparation
Students who have an academic mentor in their course should take advantage of the program! This is a wonderful way for students to keep up their GPA and retain classroom information. It's also a good time to ask more questions and get more help.
A Note to Interested Academic Mentor Applicants
If you are interested in becoming an academic mentor, please contact the director of academic resources and the instructor with whom you would like to work. The only requirement to be an academic mentor is nomination by a professor and that the course is one for which students may need an academic mentor. These positions are paid and work-study eligible.
