Gheens Endowed Scholarship
SCHOLARSHIP BACKGROUND
The trustees of The Gheens Foundation established this scholarship with a grant which was matched by Lilly Endowment, Inc., to assist young men and women from the Louisville, Kentucky, area in their pursuit of a Franklin College education. The mission of Franklin College - to prepare students for lives of excellence, leadership and service - mirrors the philosophy by which C. Edwin and Mary Jo Gheens lived. Mr. Gheens, a Louisville native, was the owner of a successful candy manufacturing company in Louisville. Mr. and Mrs. Gheens were life-long leaders in their church and committed to other philanthropic, educational and cultural endeavors in Louisville. Through this scholarship, the legacy of Mr. and Mrs. Gheens will continue to touch the lives of young men and women of Louisville.
SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS
The recipient will be a freshman student from Louisville, Kentucky. First preference will be given to a minority student pursuing a degree in education who intends to seek a teaching position in Jefferson County, Kentucky. The scholarship may be renewed annually as long as the recipient maintains a satisfactory grade point average.
