Jim and Shirley Kowalski Endowed Scholarship

SCHOLARSHIP BACKGROUND

Established in 2002 by Jim '57 and Shirley '60 Kowalski , this scholarship is intended to provide financial assistance to Franklin College students who have overcome adversity, with a preference to those students who are graduates of St. Joseph County or Elkhart County high schools. Jim and Shirley placed a high value on traits such as resiliency, innovation and persistence. They faced numerous challenges and overcame various obstacles themselves and, as a result, enjoyed a great degree of success in their personal and professional lives. Their hope was that the recipients of this scholarship will use it to help overcome the adversity they face, and in doing so, build a solid foundation for their lives after Franklin College.

SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS

The recipient must be a full-time student at Franklin College. First preference will be given to graduates of St. Joseph County or Elkhart County high schools. If no students are eligible from either of these two areas, the scholarship will be made available to students from outside the state of Indiana. The recipient will have demonstrated his or her ability to "overcome adversity" by meeting one of the following criteria: raised in a single parent household, first generation college student, worked out of necessity during high school, physically handicapped, non-traditional student, orphan or other conditions of adversity as determined by the Financial Aid Office.
