Spillman-Utterback Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Funded by bequest of George E. Utterback. The Spillman-Utterback fund was named in memory of James B. Spillman and Cordelia Spillman, stepfather and mother of the late George E. Utterback, an educator who instructed many Bartholomew County students in Latin. Utterback, who died May 20, 1982, was born in Franklin. He graduated from Franklin High School and in 1930 received a BA degree from Franklin College.
The Spillman-Utterback Scholarship will be awarded with preference to a graduate of Hauser High School in Hawcreek Township, Columbus North High School and Columbus East High School, in that order. The scholarship shall not be awarded to a graduate of the same high school for more than two consecutive years. Financial need, moral character, reasonable ability and high school performance should be the criteria when selecting the recipients. If there are no qualified applicants from previously-mentioned high schools, a recipient may be selected who is a graduate of a Franklin, Indiana, high school, meeting the criteria.
