Franklin College Facts

Mission: Franklin College shall attain excellence as a personal, participatory, values-focused, career-sensitive, liberal arts teaching and learning undergraduate community. The college shall motivate and prepare its graduates for productive and satisfying lives of excellence, leadership and service.

History: Founded 175 years ago in 1834, Franklin College is a residential four-year undergraduate liberal arts institution with a scenic, wooded campus located 20 minutes south of downtown Indianapolis. The college prepares men and women for significant careers through the liberal arts, offering its 1,047 students 36 majors, including biology, business, education and journalism. In 1842, the college began admitting women, becoming the first coeducational institution in Indiana and the seventh in the nation. Franklin College maintains a voluntary association with the American Baptist Churches USA.

Location: The Franklin College campus spans 187 acres, including athletic fields and a 31-acre biology woodland. Because Franklin is close to Indianapolis, its residents enjoy easy access to the resources offered by a large city, but they can also enjoy the charm and small-town atmosphere of Franklin itself, which has a population of roughly 20,000.

Accreditation: Franklin College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association, the Division of Professional Standards of the Indiana Department of Education, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education.

Total Enrollment: There are currently 1,047 full-time enrolled students representing 16 states and 4 nations. Franklin has maintained a student body that is 48% male and 52% female.

Entering Class: Franklin College welcomed 333 students in the fall of 2009. The middle 50 percent range score for students who took the ACT was between 20 and 25 and the middle 50 percent range score for students who took the SAT was between 1390 and 1640. 47% of our freshman class students were in the top 20% of their high school graduation class. 10% of the incoming class are from out of state. 24 members of our freshman class are multicultural/international students.

Scholarships & Financial Aid: Merit-based scholarships and need-based assistance, including federal grants, are offered. 100% of students at Franklin College receive some type of financial assistance.

Academics: Franklin College offers a bachelor's degree in 36 academic disciplines and 35 minors. The college also offers 9 pre-professional programs. The student-to-faculty ratio is 16:1. The average class size is 16. There are 66 full-time faculty members; 87% (61/70) of the Franklin College faculty holds a Ph.D. or equivalent degrees.

Organizations: Franklin College offers over 60 social, educational and service oriented organizations including Greek life, Habitat for Humanity and Student Congress.

Athletics: Franklin College is a participant in NCAA Division III athletics and is a charter member of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The school’s mascot is the grizzly bear and the school’s colors are navy blue and old gold.

Outcomes: In a survey of 183/183 '09 graduates six months post-commencement, 76.5% of graduates were already employed full-time, 14.2% were in graduate school, 4.4% were in part-time employment, 3.3% were pursuing other interests and 1.6% were still seeking employment.
