Dr. Hisaya Kitaoka was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. He has a unique background among the faculty at Franklin College. He has twenty years of experience in international business. After he earned his B.A. from Keio University in Tokyo, Japan, he started working for the Mitsubishi Corporation, the largest and leading Japanese international business company. He was involved in the oil and gas business. While he worked for the Mitsubishi Corporation, he had many opportunities to visit several oil and gas-producing countries such as England and the U.S., as well as countries in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. He was also stationed in Jakarta, Indonesia for four years.

After 20 years with Mitsubishi Corporation, Dr. Kitaoka came to the U.S. to study economics. He earned his M.A. and his PhD in economics in 2005 and 2008, respectively, both from the University of Kansas. His research interests include microeconomics, international trade, applied microeconomics, and economics education.

Dr. Kitaoka and his wife, Eiko have one daughter, Maiko. They love reading books, watching classical ballets, listening to classical music, and spending quality time together as a family.
