The Victory Bell has been given to the winner of the Hanover-Franklin football game since 1938. Hanover College's Bat Club, a non-athletic organization that wanted to improve school spirit, presented the idea for the trophy. Then-Hanover president Albert Parker designated the Franklin game, which was approved by Franklin's athletic board and student body.

The all-time series began in 1898 with Hanover winning that inaugural meeting 18-11. The series was discontinued for a 17-year stretch from 1971 to 1988, but revived with the formation of the then Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Their renewed annual meeting now enters its 22nd year. The Grizzlies have won the past four meetings. This year's rivalry clash will be at Hanover's L.S. Ayres Field.
